Aiducation International in collaboration with Junior Achievement Ghana and Swiss Re Foundation held the second Start-Up Academy in the country early July 2019 at the University of Ghana in Accra.
Under the theme “Building People, Building Nation”, the Academy - as any other Aiducation Academies - aimed at inspiring and upskilling talented young students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This week-long program brought 35 university students from across the country and was centered around start up idea creation, entrepreneurship and team-work.
To facilitate the different sessions and to provide coaching and mentoring to the bright students, five Swiss Re employees from across the world - Rolf Honold, Mary Fleischmann, Dante Scalzaretto, Jens Vollmer and Carol Liao - and four local entrepreneurs joined the Academy together with Cynthia Brauchli from Aiducation International.
Excelling with hard and soft skills
Being the 19th Academy edition globally, the second one in Ghana provided a mix of inputs and mentoring sessions to equip students with critical business skills such as business model development, customer needs and segmentation, unique selling proposition (USPs), Marketing & Sales, and basic book keeping records. In addition, a strong focus on soft skills development - negotiating and influencing skills, pitching his/her start-up ideas in front of investors and time management were also tackled.
Anastasia Kulah recounting how she benefited from Swiss Re Academy noted that she got "so much knowledge on entrepreneurship as it taught me how to use a systematic approach in translating my business ideas into practice for optimum performance.”
The manager Partners and Donors of Aiducation International, Cynthia Brauchli concluded “Through different sessions, exercises and mentoring, we aim at equipping those students with tools to help them turning their ideas into viable businesses”.
All we can say after this inspiring week in Ghana is THANK YOU! Thank you to all the participants, who now have many tools to become successful entrepreneur. We can’t wait to see the way you will make Ghana a better place.
