From AiduTalent to Nutritionist-Dietitian: A Journey of Empowerment, Gratitude, and Impact

Published on February 19, 2024

Hi everyone! I am Reign, an AiduTalent from the Philippines.

I used to be a simple Junior High student at a public school here in the Philippines until I learned about Alay Ni Ignacio, a summer program under Pathways to Higher Education. They taught underprivileged students like me advanced lessons in English, Math, and Science. Little did I know that this opportunity would open doors to more possibilities, including becoming an AiduTalent.

Reflecting on my journey, I consider the Swiss Re Start-Up Academy as one of the highlights among the many other opportunities provided by Pathways and Aiducation. This academy helped equip AiduTalents like myself with essential entrepreneurial skills and knowledge, priming us for the exciting journey of entrepreneurship. The guidance of our mentors extended far beyond the technical aspects of entrepreneurship, focusing on honing our interpersonal and communication skills which are vital for success in any endeavor. Our mentors emphasized the importance of clear and effective communication. They provided constructive feedback on articulating ideas persuasively, whether in pitching a business concept or engaging in networking opportunities. Though nerve-wracking at first, I learned to communicate with confidence and clarity through practice and guidance, which helped me build relationships and convey my vision effectively.

Through the dynamic environment of the academy, I had the opportunity to collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, developing leadership skills and adaptability. Through collaborative projects and exercises, I learned to lead and motivate others towards a common goal while also embracing failure as a learning opportunity. Our mentors also emphasized emotional intelligence, enabling me to navigate social dynamics and build meaningful connections with my co-participants. In fact, my group won the major activity held in the academy (I just don’t remember what number we placed!), where we pitched our business plan to our mentors.

I really appreciate the opportunities that Pathways and Aiducation have provided me. Through them, I have found a support system that has been instrumental in my personal and academic growth. Through my participation in GYLA as well, I had the privilege of engaging with like-minded peers – exchanging valuable experiences and sharing the objectives of fostering leadership and making a positive social impact.

I remember when I was applying to be an AiduTalent and I said in my essay that I wanted to be a pediatrician who helps financially challenged families here in the Philippines. Even though I am not a doctor yet, I can proudly say that I still have that same passion burning inside me that inspires me to achieve that goal step by step – even if it takes much time and resources.

Recently, I achieved a significant milestone by passing the Nutritionist-Dietitian Licensure Exam (NDLE), officially becoming a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian here in the Philippines. My journey to this accomplishment began when I graduated Magna Cum Laude in September 2023 from my beloved alma mater, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, with a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics degree. Despite having less than two months to prepare for the NDLE after graduation, passing it still seems surreal.

While I may not yet fully comprehend how I managed to achieve this feat, I know that I would not be where I am today without the unwavering support of my family, loved ones, and the communities of Pathways to Higher Education and Aiducation International. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for their support, guidance, and the opportunities that transformed my life. Your commitment to education has transformed countless lives, including mine. You have opened doors that I once thought were beyond reach, enabling me to pursue my dreams and make a positive impact in my community.

To my donor, Mr. Thomas Pfister, your generosity is truly inspiring and I am forever grateful for the role you played in shaping my future. Thank you for believing in me and being a pillar of support on this journey.

To anyone reading this, I encourage you to embrace your voice, ideas, and actions. Let us inspire and uplift one another, turning visions into reality for a brighter future. Each of us has the potential to make a difference in our communities and beyond.
