Aiducation Scholarship: A Life-Changing Opportunity:
Hello, I'm Namayi Josephine Auma, a 23-year-old woman hailing from the vibrant city of Nairobi, Kenya. I am currently in my fourth year pursuing my bachelor’s degree in education arts at The University of Nairobi. Allow me to take you on a journey through my educational and community engagement experiences, all of which have been profoundly influenced by the invaluable support of Aiducation.

In 2017, I received the Aiducation Scholarship, a pivotal moment that set my path toward educational achievement. This scholarship paved the way for my high school education at Butere Girls High School in Kakamega County, marking the first step on my journey of empowerment.

Giving Back through Volunteer Work:

After completing my Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams in 2019, I didn't just rest on my laurels; instead, I embraced the opportunity to give back. I joined Aiducation as a Website Profile Creation Volunteer and lent a helping hand whenever it was needed at the office, conveniently located near my home in Kibra. This volunteer experience ignited a passion for the NGO sector, as I found immense joy in working with the community and witnessing the smiles of those we touched.

Transformative Experiences with Aiducation:

My journey with Aiducation didn't stop there. I had the privilege of participating in several transformative programs, including the one-year e-Mentoring program, the Swiss Re Start-Up Academy, and the Corporate Career Academy. These experiences laid a strong foundation for my passion and drive, pushing me out of my comfort zone. Notably, my e-Mentor, Maria Beylina, played a pivotal role in refining my CV to align with modern workplace requirements, making job interviews seem like a breeze.

Community Development Initiatives:

Over the past three years, I have been actively engaged in community development in Kibera and Kawangware, two informal settlements in Nairobi. I served as a community-level trainer, equipping youths and women aged 15 to 35 with entrepreneurial and employability skills, preparing them for the dynamic Kenyan job and business markets. Additionally, I collaborated with the British Council on the "Skills for Inclusive Digital Participation" project, empowering marginalized groups with digital skills. My daily motivation stems from the belief that the youth within my reach can become the best version of themselves through education and empowerment.

International Exchange Program in South Africa:

This year brought a significant opportunity for personal growth and learning as I travelled to South Africa on an exchange program organized by the Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (NOREC). This eight-month journey, divided into three months in South Africa and five months in Kenya (including two months of follow-up work), broadened my horizons. In South Africa, I delved into the nonprofit sector and explored community engagement from a new perspective. My biggest takeaway from this experience was the significance of the Asset-Based Community Development Model (ABCD). This approach involves assessing the existing resources within a community before seeking external support. It's a concept that extends to businesses and start-ups, helping entrepreneurs reduce costs while launching and managing their ventures. I also witnessed firsthand how organizations collaborated with schools to create equal educational opportunities for township students, fostering creativity through after-school programs.

Returning to Community Empowerment:
My return to my home organization, Development Associates for Young Africans (DAY AFRICA), was marked with a renewed determination to drive change in my community using the skills I gained during my exchange. Exposure comes with the responsibility to apply experiences effectively, and I now see my community not as the largest slum in Kenya but as a place rich in resources with the potential to grow and advance with the right support. It's all about who is steering the ship.

A Heartfelt Thanks: Gratitude to Aiducation and Suzzanne

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Aiducation and my sponsor, Suzzanne, for granting me the gift of education. I vividly remember the anxiety between completing primary school and transitioning to high school. Despite receiving high marks, I applied for 15 different scholarships, but only Aiducation recognized the potential within me at that time. I encourage my fellow alumni to maintain open-mindedness in their thinking. If salaried jobs seem elusive, start with volunteering. The experience gained through volunteering can help you climb the ladder in ways you might never have imagined. My journey has taken me across oceans and countries, introducing me to leaders, changemakers, entrepreneurs, and businesspeople. It's a testament that, indeed, "Inawezekana" – it is possible.
